I'm never buying hand sanitizer again. Ever.

Ok, that's probably not true, but I wanted to make a dramatic entrance.

When we went to Utah for Christmas, my dad had a cold, and Paul had just gotten over a cold. By the end of the trip my dad, mom, Paul, Laura, me, and Garrett all had colds. When the four of us got home we did a good job at keeping it away from Addie, but we did a bad job at getting over it.

When we were all finally healthy I became slightly obsessed with keeping everything and everyone clean of germs. I've tried to limit Garrett's time in public and if I do take him places, I wipe down the entire shopping cart, and I don't let him touch things, etc. If we play at the park, I practically follow him around with wipes. And when we've gotten together with people I ask ahead of time if everyone we're going with is healthy. I did a really good job and keeping my kids healthy.

Why my sudden obsession with germs?

Garrett is scheduled for surgery this Monday, the 6th. If we still lived in Utah he would have had it last March. But because we moved we had to find a new ped, get another referral, have another consultation, and schedule the surgery here. Just to get a consultation they were 4 and a half months out, and even though I told them we had a consultation in Utah, we know what he needs, we have paper work, can't we schedule the surgery now while we're at it? The response was no, the doc had to see us in order to have us pay $40 (again) and say, yep, the Utah doctor is right, (who the doc here happens to be friends with) he needs surgery. Then the surgery schedule was booked out another 4 months. So I started this process in California last February and the earliest they could get us in for surgery was November. Right when Addie was due...and then the holidays, visitors, traveling, etc. So we scheduled it for February. The nurse told us that we needed to be careful because it was right in the middle of cold and flu season and in order to have the surgery he needed to be "completely healthy". I did a damn good job all of January doing just that, keeping him, and all of us healthy. Then yesterday morning at 3AM I heard coughing. I prayed it was just a little tickle in his throat. Then at about 6AM I heard coughing and sneezing. When I went to get him out of bed, his face was covered in snot, and he was rubbing his swollen eyes. I hoped it was just some sudden allergic reaction to the laundry soap, or the fish tank...or something!...and that as soon as we walked out of his room he'd be fine.

I spent all day yesterday wiping buckets and buckets of snot from his nose. Things just kept getting worse.

To say I'm pissed off is beyond an understatement. I know it shouldn't get to me like this, but it's been lingering over us for nearly a year and a half and I just want it done!

I told my massage lady last night that it was one of the worst days of my life. (continuing with my dramatic theme) I think I even punched my steering wheel on the way home. I felt sad for my little G man. I even started being hard on myself, blaming me for his cold because I wasn't able to nurse him for a year. I know a lot of sick breastfed babies and a lot of healthy formula fed babies, but whatever. I even cried a little bit while I was brushing my teeth last night.

So unless a freaking miracle happens in the next 24 hours, I have to call the hospital and reschedule this blasted surgery.

But I hope you all are having a fantastic day.

Oh, and did I mention that my parents are flying in tomorrow morning to watch Addie while we're at the hospital and help around the house for a few days? Yeah, they are.

doc bands, meds, and colds. in no particular order.

Paul had a cold. Then he got over it. Then Garrett got a cold. Then Paul got a cold. Then Paul got over it. Then Garrett got over it. Then I got a cold. That brings you up to date on the cold situation at our house.

I didn't take my unisom combo last night. I took Metoclopramide instead. Big mistake. Huge. My doc warned me that it could make me a little loopy. She said it was safe to take every 6 hours, but if I did, I'd want to have some help lined up because I may not function. I took it just before 9PM when Garrett was asleep. Paul and I went to bed at 11PM. I start feeling tired with unisom within about 20 minutes. I felt nothing from the Meto-blahblah. I laid in bed. Then I started singing 'For health and strength' and 'Row row row your boat'. Oh did I mention that I threw up right before I went to bed? Then I made Paul sing the 2 songs with me in rounds. Then he dosed off. I woke him up to talk about something. Honestly can't remember what. I think it was something about me being a bad wife and a bad mom. Then I noticed the light on the ceiling from the screen of Garrett's monitor. So I did a hand puppet show with the shadows. It was a dinosaur and a unicorn fighting. Then I made Paul try and guess the shadow sign language for 'I heart you'. Then he went back to sleep. At 2AM I realized I was still awake. At 3:30AM I realized I was still awake and needed to pee. So I did. I also realized it had been more than 6 hours since I took a pill. So I took a half of a unisom. Those don't wear off for about 9 hours, so I got about 3 hours left. I played brick breaker on my phone for an hour and then fell asleep. 2 hours later the men who are re-roofing our building got here. It sounds like a herd of wild elephants running around for about 10 hours a day. And that's where we're at right now. Oh and this morning? I remember singing and puppet showing. I just don't remember why I did it. I also text Paul at 8AM to see if we could go camping and he said, "Is this the meds talking?" But it's not, I really want to go camping.

We took Garrett to Cranial Technologies yesterday for a head evaluation and the first round of pictures. He's getting a helmet. Paul and I feel good about what they told us. I'll fill in more details when we go in for round 2 of pictures and get fitted, but for now, he'll probably have it in about 3 weeks and he'll wear it for 23 hours a day for the next 3.5 to 8 months. I know, right? Oh well. We saw a lot of doc band babies yesterday and they all seem to not mind the 4 ounces of plastic on their heads all day. And I talked to a lady in the elevator who had a 12 month old who was in his 5th month of doc band usage and she said he loves it and she sees tons of improvement. When its off for the 1 hour a day he wonders where it is. My only question is how does 4 ounces of plastic cost so much? Oh well, you can't put a price on a round head. Well, actually you can, and it's about $4500.00. Oh and did I mention that if he needs it for more than 4 months we have to have a second helmet made? So $4500 X2. We're waiting to hear tomorrow if our insurance covers any of this 'elective' treatment.

packing for utah ???

Garrett and I are supposed to be heading to Utah tomorrow night. That's the plan right now anyway. Unfortunately our weekend whirlwind trip kind of did the little G man in. Early Monday morning, like 4am, I heard him coughing in his crib. He slept through it so I wasn't too worried. But all day monday he was sneezing, coughing, and rubbing his face a lot. He woke up 3 times during the night on Monday night and I could tell he just wasn't feeling good.

I called the doc yesterday and took him in. One eye was just slightly pinkish and watery, and he was still sneezing and coughing and had a pretty runny nose. The doc said he thinks its just a mild cold, but he said that he's had a few cases of pneumonia with babies this week so we started a 10 day antibiotic just to prevent that. I told him about our trip and asked if I should cancel it, and he said, no and that Garrett will be fine.

I had him sleep in the pack and play next to our bed last night. He fell asleep fast but at about midnight he woke up. He could not get comfortable. He tossed and turned, and grunted. No crying, but not falling back to sleep. I finally picked him up and put him in bed with us. He was asleep in seconds and he literally didn't move for 7 more hours. This is the first time Garrett has slept with us. I'm not a fan of co-sleeping, and it definitely wont be a normal thing, but I loved waking up next to a cozy, warm, cuddly baby.

This morning has been about the same as yesterday, except that he's a little more content today. Yesterday he was pretty fussy and if he wasn't within arms reach of me he'd cry. Today he's back to playing and entertaining himself. But still all the same cold stuff going on. I hate seeing him like this. The only good part is when he's really tired but not falling asleep he wants to cuddle. He rests his head on my shoulder or chest and just looks at me, or looks at my shirt. I had a jacket on during one snuggle and he just kept lightly rubbing the zipper while resting on me. Oh I love it! It made me miss when he was a month or so and all we did all day was cuddle. He's still smiling and laughing, even when he had snot running down his face and watery eyes. He's just so positive and easy-going all the time. Sometimes I wonder how he came from me.

Anyway, that's where we're at right now. If I don't see some more improvement by tomorrow morning, we may postpone our trip for a couple days. But praying we make it out tomorrow.

Sick and Productive

So the pink eye got worse and spread to my throat. No, I didn't have Pink Throat, I had a form of pink eye that infects everything from the shoulders up. It was bad. I went back to the insta care. Got a prescription for a gargle throat numbing thing (all I could get cuz of the baby.) The gargle just made me almost choke to death 3 times, so I decided to live with the pain. (Have I mentioned my extremely sensitive gag reflex that I blame on pregnancy? Never had a problem in my life, and now my eyes water and I gag/almost throw up when I brush my teeth. So a creamy mediciny stinky liquid disguised with bubble gum flavor didn't work for me.

It lasted 10 days, and the other eye eventually turned pink, but by yesterday my throat was better and both eyes were really light pinkish and one didn't open all the way. But today I'm almost at 100%. By Thursday of last week I decided that if I couldn't get better being lazy, I'd try and get better being productive.

Look what we did!

This is a little dresser for the little stuff. Socks, hats, shoes, and any other tiny things Paw needs. We bought it unfinished and I stained and painted it and Paul helped with the finish.
We moved all of my stuff out of the nursery and into my own little nook in the den.

Picked up more furniture from my work.

Paul played peacemaker after a little fender bender involving 2 very angry people.

Bought paint. Two times.

Our truck got hit at Home depot. Nothing major.

Paul and I painted and finished this book/toy shelf.
Went shopping at IKEA and Babies R Us.

Painted ceiling and base boards. (Thanks mom, that was all her)
Painted walls.
Moved dresser, changing table and book shelf into the nursery.
Weed whacked our yard.

Painted and stained our garden boxes.
Planted our square foot garden.

We have so many projects that we love working on. I love that its warm. I love that we have a yard to spend time in. I love making changes around the house.

I also have a slight fear that I'm going to have the fatigue of trimester 3 hit me. I've been pretty on track with all the "normal" happenings of each phase of this process, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if I got the trimester 3 sleepys. That's just a couple weeks away so I want to get as much of the major stuff done before mid-june.

Time is flying.

Also, we've picked a name. First AND middle. I really love it, and I really have to keep reminding myself that Paul won't let us tell anyone what it is until delivery day. I'm so bad at secrets, but I think I can do it.

Another one of THOSE posts.

Ya know, the ones where I'm not complaining, I'm just documenting.

Ok, Thursday afternoon my nurse called to let me know that my B-12 is at 143. The lowest its ever been. "Low" is 190. I'm 143. I'd been on B-12 before but in October my old doctor tested me and I was at 150ish. I got on an iron supplement because somehow B-12 and iron are linked, and I've been anemic for years and when dealing with anemia B-12 and iron are best friends. By December I was in the 200's so I was to continue the iron prescription, but didn't need B-12. Well, at the end of December I went and got myself all pregnant, and apparently this baby thinks B-12 is delicious and he's taking it all. (I'll teach him to share when he comes out.) So, the nurse called in a prescription. The B-12 is injection form, so after work Paul went and picked up the meds and the syringes. Friday morning we went to the hospital with all our gear and a PA gave me a shot and taught Paul how to give me a shot, (So I don't have to go to the hospital everyday.) So Paul is now giving me a shot every night for a week, then every week for a month, and every month for...ever, probably.

After my first shot on Friday my right eye turned pink, totally unrelated I've found out now, but I tried all weekend to blame the b-12. I was miserable all weekend, still taking meds, still getting shots, still having a red swollen burning, itching eye. This morning we had a normal appointment with my OB. Things went fine. Although she told me to add ANOTHER iron supplement. Also, she casually mentioned that I needed to go get checked for pink eye. I asked if she thought it was a B-12 reaction, she looked at me like "No stupid, it's pink eye." Awesome. So we left there and I headed to an insta-care. Yes, it's pink eye. (And a cold and swollen tonsils.) Got ANOTHER prescription for eye drops and got home 4 hours later.
Anyone who knows me (or knows my mom) know that we don't go to the doctor. Growing up I thought clinics and pharmacies were for people with one foot in the grave. I NEVER went to the doctor or took medicine. I've been to the doctor at least 10 times in the past 4 months. Sure, it's mostly baby, but I never thought I'd be a doctors office/hospital/pharmacy pro. And a couple times is the past 4 months I've been to the doc twice in one day. Unheard of before now. When I was younger I thought "getting a prescription filled" required thousands of dollars, an interview with a rocket scientist, and a signature from the president or something. Now the folks over at Walgreen's practically know me by name.

I was a little discouraged and emotional today after doctor visit number one, but after number two and a trip to the pharmacy. I'm ok. I typically wouldn't get emotional about an eye infection and an extra vitamin, but I'm pregnant. I need an entire box of tissues just to watch Lincoln Financial Group and Foldger's Coffee commercials, so give me a break.

In two weeks I go back for more blood work to test all of the above and two weeks later I go back for my diabetes test and my first Rhogam shot, (because of the negative blood.)

Oh and because I hate milk and don't get a lot of dairy, I'm adding a calcium supplement, too What's one more pill?!

So just to make sure you got all that.

-prenatals (2 pills)
-prescription iron
-over the counter iron
-B-12 shots
-Negative blood
-a cold
-pink eye
-back pain
-no sleep
-calcium pill

And,

-a healthy baby who is (thankfully) taking everything he needs from me.
-an amazing baby heartbeat that I could listen to all day.
-a BIG baby, who measured 24 weeks and not the 23 weeks and a day that I'm technically at right now.
-3 lbs gained this month, which I'm not complaining about. This puts me at 6.4 lbs thus far in the pregnancy.
-An amazing husband who is totally kicking butt and the whole "in sickness and in health" thing. I couldn't do this without him.

I'm so excited to meet this little guy. In spite of everything I just complai...documented, I love being pregnant. I love feeling him kick, I love that I can lay in bed with my hands on my belly and feel him wiggling around in there. I love him so much.
Just another day...
